McALLEN - Benny Rodriguez Jr. thought there must have been a mistake.

The general manager of Bob Stark’s Beef Shop said his electric bill in late June had more than doubled from what it was the month before.

But even as the temperature rose outside, his business did not use significantly more electricity.

(May 16 2008) Texas Pre Buy Power has gone out of business. This electric provider in Texas was based on the business model of selling energy by having their customer pre pay for the energy they sell. This seems to make sense and a fail safe way to make sure you get your money. One mistake many providers make is not hedging the energy they sell. If the market goes up beyond the levels the energy provider in Texas expects they could be upside down in their energy investment and either pass this mistake on to their customers or go bankrupt. In this case their customers have the option to stay with the company or shop elsewhere. Apparently most of their customers went shopping elsewhere.

Commerce energy continues to lead the Houston area with the highest rates at 24.3 cents per kWh up from 24.1 last month. (about 3 times higher than San Antonio) The lowest month to month charge is Ambit Energy at 15.6 up from 12.9 last month.
