High Energy Prices For August 2008

Combat Energy Prices Now - Help Educate Others That They Have A Choice In Who They What To USE - RGVLIGHT.COM

Here is the article from a Houston, TX newspaper.

Reliant Energy, the Goliath of David and Goliath in energy providers, is leading the pack this month with a variable rate of 23.5 cents per kWh for electricity while the little known David, YEP, is offering a rate of 13.8 cents. Doesn’t seem to make cents, does it?

On the fixed rate scale for August, First Choice Power is charging 21.7 cents for a 12 month contract, while Stream Energy is charging 13.7 cents for a 6 month contract. (this has scam written all over it. More in a different post. Maybe you can figure it out?)

Comparing to last month:
Commerce energy continues to lead the Houston area with the highest rates at 24.3 cents per kWh up from 24.1 last month. (about 3 times higher than San Antonio) The lowest month to month charge is Ambit Energy at 15.6 up from 12.9 last month.

Lock and Loaded
Consumers can lock into to a relatively “low” rate for an extended term, avoiding any fluctuation in profits. Topping the charts for the highest fixed rates is First Choice Power at 22.8 cents for 12 months, and US Energy Savings Corp has the lowest fixed rate at 16.1 cents but a 5 year commitment is required with penalties for early termination.
Goliath
You have to wonder why Reliant Energy, the Goliath of energy providers in the state of Texas is charging the highest rate in the area, while YEP, a little know provider can charge only 13.7 cents per month. Is Reliant incompetent or is there something else?

Something else
Prior to the brain fart called deregulation, Reliant Energy was providing energy to all of the homeowners in the Houston area. Things were pretty nice then. Low cost. Little or no need for customer support. Reliable service. And Reliant was making money.

Then the republicans passed gas and deregulation allowing consumers to choose a different provider, or default to Reliant. Many not having the power of the internets, defaulted to Reliant, with a month to month contract. Reliant had a captive audience, so why lower the rates? Charge the hell out of them, make more profit, and nobody knows any better.

Speculation
Of course, this is speculation on my part, but you really have to wonder why the Goliath Reliant energy can’t compete with the little David, YEP.

And David
