– Overrule the Apex Court’s judgment for immediate disqualification of lawmakers convicted of a criminal offence

NA, New Delhi:

In a step to give big relief for tainted politicians the UPA cabinet cleared an ordinance to reverse to reverse the judgment of Apex court, for immediate disqualification of lawmakers convicted of a criminal offence punishable with two years or more in jail.

To give relief the ordinance allows convicted MPs/MLAs to continue if their appeal is admitted by a higher court within three months and conviction stayed. However these kinds of MPs/MLAs will not able to vote or draw salaries till the final decision.

Most of the political parties had reacted strongly against the Supreme Court’s verdict and wanted it reversed through an amendment to the Representation of the People Act, but public opinion forced a rethink.

Due to the court order few big leaders of UPA risked losing their seat. These leaders are congress Rajya Sabha MP Rashid Masood who has convicted on 19 September and to be sentenced on October one. Other one is Rashtriya Janta Dal supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, too have lost his membership of the Lok Sabha if found guilty in a fodder scam case to be decided on September 30. Lalu Yadav has given  support to UPA from outside.

Meanwhile Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) condemns the ordinance that has reversed the order of apex court which had debarred tainted politicians from contesting polls. The passing of this ordinance is not only a severe blow to Democracy, but also exposes the intentions of the political class which has stooped to a new low to protect the corrupt.
